Inspired by cherished memories of Queenstown, Guy and Ann set out to carve a life in Gibbston, joining forces with the Railton family to farm the high country at Mt Rosa Station. But by 1999, with wool prices falling and sheep farming becoming increasingly difficult, they decided to send the sheep packing and plant vines instead, launching a new chapter in their lives.
It was a bold move that paid off. The same rugged terrain and challenging, rocky soils that made farming tough turned out to be ideal for growing grapes. They started with Sauvignon Blanc from Felton Road, harvesting the first crop in 2002. The following year, they added Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris, and later experimented with Pinot Blanc and Gamay Noir.
In 2007, they opened a Cellar Door in the old woolshed at Mt Rosa Station, welcoming visitors to enjoy their wines. Even after selling the working station in 2018, they kept the vineyard and chose a spot among the vines, surrounded by mountains, to build a new Cellar Door.
By July 2021, their vision came to life with the opening of a modern woolshed-style Cellar Door, paying homage to their farming roots while adding a few modern comforts for friends and visitors.
Ann and Guy remain deeply involved, with Guy often found in the tasting room or out in the vineyard, and Ann creating delicious platters to pair with their wines. Their passion for wine and people is evident in every corner of the vineyard and Cellar Door.
Mt Rosa remains proudly family-owned and operated, with a single estate vineyard now producing five varietals. They love sharing their wines and stories with visitors, creating memories that last as long as the wine.
